Pioneer-Dietecs Company History
John Oscar Larson began as a die maker working in various die making facilities in Brockton, Massachusetts in the 1890’s. In 1912, Oscar worked at the Boston Cutting Die Company in South Boston, and bought the company a few years later. At the time, Boston Cutting Die serviced the shoemaking and paper industries in the Boston area.Oscar's sons Ernest and Alton joined the business in the late 1920’s and Oscar remained with the company until his death in 1952, when his sons took over management of the company.
The next generation of Larson’s, Ernest's son Jerold and Alton's son Robert eventually joined the company. Jerold and Robert grew up in the business with die-steel in their blood, learning the business from the ground up, earning bachelor's degrees in engineering and business administration while working in the factory in various capacities.
A Changing Die Business
In the 50’s and 60’s the nature of the die business began to change. Shoe manufacturing in the Boston area relocated to the south or to overseas locations. To compensate for the loss of business, the Larson’s developed new business serving the apparel trades in New England and New York City. The company also began to service the plastics industry by producing dies to cut a wide array of soft to semi-rigid plastic materials.
The company grew through sales and acquisitions to a company with over 60 employees. In the mid-70’s, the company bought a plunge-type electronic discharge machine (EDM) and in 1978, invested in a CNC traveling-wire EDM machine. The company was the first cutting die manufacturer in the USA to incorporate wire EDM into the manufacturing process for making knife-edged cutting dies. This allowed the company to produce closer tolerance ASTM and other dies.
In 1984, the Larsons sold and merged their operations into a die facility owned by Hudson Machinery Corporation. The new company was to be known as Brockton/Boston Cutting Die, a division of the Hudson Die Group. The merger was intended to combine two of the leading American die makers (Boston and Brockton) into one powerful new die group with high expectations.
